Sustained Effort Over Time

The effort needs to be supportive, regular, and sustained over an established period of time. Establishing a routine takes sustained practice. This allows the organizations to develop longer-term relationships with the participants.

Colorado Migrant Education Program
The Preschool Readiness Checklist is administered 3 times over a period of time to determine improvement or lack thereof in preschool readiness.

The Bins Program is administered every 3 to 4 weeks over an extended period of time.

Cooking Matters
From Our Program: Our Signature Courses
Share Our Strength provides seven specialized curricula held in six-week courses that cover nutrition and healthy eating, food preparation, budgeting and shopping. Courses are for Adults, Kids, Families, Teens, Childcare Professionals, Parents of Preschoolers, Diabetes and Wellness.
  • Cooking Matters for Adults teaches low-income adults (primarily adults with children) how to prepare and shop sensibly for healthy meals on a limited budget. The program is often paired with Cooking Matters EXTRA for Parents of Preschoolers, an addendum focused specifically on adults with preschool-age children or Cooking Matters EXTRA for Diabetes, addenda offering specialized information for adults living with diabetes. Cooking Matters for Adults and Cooking Matters EXTRA for Parents of Preschoolers are available in both English and Spanish.
  • Cooking Matters for Kids engages kids ages 8 to 12 in learning about healthy eating and provides simple nutritious recipes that children can prepare themselves.
  • Cooking Matters for Families teaches school-age children (ages 6 to 12) and their parents about healthy eating as a family and the importance of working together to plan and prepare healthy meals on a budget.
  • Cooking Matters for Teens teaches teens how to make healthy food choices, meals and snacks for themselves, their families and friends.
  • Cooking Matters for Child Care Professionals teaches child care professionals about healthy meal preparation and creating a healthy food environment for the kids in their care.

Cool Culture
Families can register for their Cool Culture Family Pass beginning in August. It expires on October 31st.
Monthly family events are promoted by the Cultural Liaisons at their centers, on Facebook, in the Family Time magazine, e-Family Time e-newsletter and The Rundown e-newsletter for Cultural Liaisons

The new moms who had received treatment at the clinic began bringing their children in.

"Not only were they more likely to bring their children in than women who hadn't been in the program, but they were likely to bring them in earlier," Lewis says. "In a high-risk population, the chances of us seeing a child by the first birthday are virtually nil. But with these women, we do. And by age 3, their children have about a third as many cavities as other kids in the same income group."

And when kids do get cavities, they are smaller and less expensive to treat. They also are more likely to avoid the surgery that can be involved. Lewis notes that Children's Hospital Colorado keeps several operating rooms busy daily with oral disease cases.

"That means they have to go to the hospital less often. It really does affect the whole cycle," Lewis says.

Nurse-Family Partnership
From Program Approach
Long-term program duration: from early in pregnancy through child’s second birthday for continuity and support
Raising a Reader
Each week children in the Raising A Reader program take home 2-4 different books, exposing them to approximately 100 high quality children's books each year.

The length of the program cycle depends on the needs of each individual affiliate. For example, the program cycle could last just 8 weeks in a summer bridge program and more than 45 weeks in a year-round home visiting program.
Reach Out and Read Colorado
The program begins at the 6-month checkup and continues through age 5, with a special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities.
Ready to Read Corps
Preliminary Longitudinal Study
Of those participants responding that they had taken part in the literacy activities in the first phone call, the number who again responded that they had taken part in these same activities in the second phone call was calculated.
  • Over 92% of participants continued to take part in each of the five activities in the second call, which is close to a year after the intervention.
  • 68-76% of the total participants called twice reported taking part in these activities once a week or more.
